‘I have to wait for Sky Sports’ Rangers captain Tavernier in dark on Todd Cantwell but backs ‘attractive’ Ibrox for move

JAMES TAVERNIER last night insisted Rangers should be a massive draw for top English talent.

Gers have been linked with Todd Cantwell and Tom Davies.

Tavernier made the switch north in 2015 and has told both targets they’d love life in Glasgow.

Ahead of Sunday’s League Cup semi-final showdown against Aberdeen, the Ibrox captain said: “I think it should be an attractive option.

“Obviously it was a disappointing Champions League campaign but we want to get Champions League football again and hopefully get it on a regular basis.

“We made a European final last year.

“This is a place where you can win trophies and you won’t get many places like this with the supporters and the atmosphere we get.

“I think it’s a really attractive football club for players, as they can see with Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey.

“Hopefully we can attract a lot more players.

“I think we are always looking to add quality to the team here and improve it.

“We’re all football people. Everyone is trying to do business and improve their teams.

“That’s what we are trying to do. Just add that quality.

“As a player and a captain, you always welcome that.

“You always want to improve the team and hopefully we can get a few players.”

Behind the scenes, Rangers are understood to be making progress in their efforts to bring new faces to the club.

New Ibrox gaffer Michael Beale hopes to secure at least three January signings.

And following his side’s 2-0 win over Dundee United at the weekend, he praised both Cantwell and Davies.

Norwich star Cantwell is also wanted by Blackburn Rovers — but it is believed Gers are in pole position to land the midfielder.

Tavernier said: “Obviously they’re rumoured players, but I will probably have to wait for Sky Sports to find out.

“If the club wanted me to speak to them, or if I knew a friend of a friend, then I’d obviously try and convince them to come here to improve the team.

“But it’s normally left to the manager and Ross Wilson.”

Meanwhile, it’s 12 years since Rangers last got their hands on the League Cup.

And the skipper believes success this season could be the catalyst for future glory under Beale.

Tavernier added: “I think with it being such an early competition that you can win, if you can add that to your trophy cabinet then it can give you good momentum for the rest of the campaign.

“That’s something that we’ve obviously got our sights on.

“But we’ve got to get past Aberdeen this weekend — and it will be a tough game.

“We’ve been in good form and as a team I think we are getting better all the time.

“Everyone is at it and at the weekend hopefully we can put in a good performance and make it to another final.”
