“Bedhead” Hair Is Intentionally Messy – in That Sexy, Undone Way

Think about the way your hair looks in the morning when you first wake up. If you tend to toss and turn at night, maybe it’s a little tousled, creased, or frizzy from the friction of your pillowcase. We often fix it with a hot tool or pull it back in an updo to conceal any evidence before heading out the door, but who says the way it looks is a bad thing? Now, there’s an emerging hairstyle trend called “bedhead hair” that’ll convince you to leave it as is.

If you’re ready to officially enter your “indie sleaze” 2010s Tumblr era, following on the heels of Bella Hadid, Doja Cat, and Jenna Ortega, then the “bedhead” hairstyle trend is just what you need.

It was only a matter of time before we pivoted away from minimal beauty to the opposite end of the spectrum, and that’s where the bedhead hairstyle comes in. This look really needs to introduction – it’s messy and undone but in a really hot, effortless, chic sort of way. It’s shaping up to be a popular hairstyle for stars and TikTokers alike.

“The ‘bedhead’ texture will be everywhere soon,” Stéphane Ferraira, Live True London‘s senior colorist, tells POPSUGAR. The goal of this hair trend is to achieve an I-woke-up-like-this level of glamour, embodying the “less is more” philosophy.

Depending on your individual hair type and current cut, bedhead hair looks a little different for everyone. If you have straight or fine hair, that could mean an intentionally imperfect wave or untouched flyaways. For natural or textured hair, that might mean less defined curls and some intentional frizz throughout. All that matters is you embrace your texture and natural beauty – don’t spend too much time fussing. If you wake up looking imperfect with some out-of-place hairs, that’s kind of the point.

“We’ve already started seeing a lot of slept-in blow-dries and three-day-old waves, which can be enhanced with styling sprays and pomades,” Ferraira says. “We’re seeing a step away from pristinely styled hair.” It’s good news for anyone who hasn’t quite nailed the fluffy supermodel blowout that took TikTok by storm – or anyone who is just tired of spending an hour on their hair (me, it’s me).

To add texture and a bit more grit to your hair, Ferraira recommends you stock up on the right styling products. For texture sprays, we like the Ceremonia Guava Beach Waves Hair Texturizing Spray ($20) and the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($49).

For pomades, the Charlotte Mensah Manketti Oil Hair Pomade ($60) and Ouai Matte Pomade ($24) are great. If you have naturally curly or coily hair, reach for a curl refreshing spray, like the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Curl Refresher Spray ($12).

The goal is to look like you just rolled around in bed for the last few hours (doing what is none of our business . . . ), threw on some quick makeup and a chic outfit, and ran out the door. Keep scrolling for more proof of just how hot bedhead hair can be.
