But he’s set to return next week and is 10/11 with Betfair to lift a record TENTH Aussie Open – and match Rafa Nadal’s record of 22 Grand Slam titles.
That’s in part due to the injury and absence of world number one Carlos Alcaraz.
Daniil Medvedev – who Djokovic beat in straight sets in the warm-up event in Adelaide – is second favourite at 11/2.
Nadal (13/1), Nick Kyrgios (14/1) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (16/1) will all fancy their chances also.
From a British perspective, Cam Norrie (66/1), Jack Draper (150/1), Andy Murray (250/1) and Dan Evans (300/1) look to have quite the task ahead of them.

While in the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek unsurprisingly leads the betting as the 15/8 favourite.
Again, she’s helped by the fact Ash Barty – current holder of the Aussie Open – retired during the year in 2022.
Swiatek leads big-hitting Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka (17/2) and Caroline Garcia (10/1) at the top of the market with Betfair.
Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur are both 11/1, with Coco Gauff a 13/1 shot.
Emma Raducanu is fighting to be fit for the event after limping out of the ASB Classic in tears in the lead up to the event,

She is 50/1 to win this competition with Betfair.
Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Novak Djokovic is the clear 10/11 odds-on favourite to win the 2023 Men’s Australian Open, a year after he was deported from Melbourne for not being vaccinated against COVID.
“Djokovic will be looking to equal Rafael Nadal’s record-breaking 22 Grand Slam triumphs, but Daniil Medvedev stands in his way at 11/2, while the Spaniard is 13/1 to win a second successive Australian Open.
“For the women’s tournament, Iga Swiatek is the 15/8 frontrunner to go all the way in Melbourne, while all eyes are likely to be on Emma Raducanu, who faces a late fitness test after rolling her ankle.
“The 2021 US Open winner is a big outsider at 50/1 to lift a second Grand Slam title.”
