Around 10,000 Mark I Escort Mexicos were made, but there’s a reason there were far fewer of the car you see here – it has rear doors.

While most Mexicos had two doors, only six genuine four-door Escort Mexicos were officially assembled.

According to Escort expert Dan Williamson’s book Factory Original Sporting Mk1 Escorts, one four-door was retained by Ford, another was sold to a customer and four were used as police cars in Jersey.

All had Ford’s full ‘Mexico’ specification and were powered by a 1.6-litre Crossflow engine.

This one is up for sale having been fully restored and is said to be in ‘museum condition.’

It has just less than 37,000 miles on the clock and is presented in an eye-catching shade of metallic brown.

Having dominated in a 16,000-mile-long rally from London to Mexico in 1970, Ford decided to honour their victory with a special model with the same name.

The Escort Mexico is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine with 86hp – not much by today’s standards but raucous in such a light car in 1972.

The auction is now live and will run until 22nd January, with the bidding already beyond £21,000.

Ford Escort Mexicos often sell for upwards of £40,000 but this one-of-six prototype is likely to fetch much more.

But this is a rare Mexico as it’s one of only six made with rear doorsBidding Classics
