‘Past his sell-by date’ – Graeme Souness rips into Hugo Lloris after huge blunder in Tottenham defeat to Aston Villa

FORMER Liverpool star Graeme Souness has slammed Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris for having the “worst record of any goalkeeper” in the Premier League.

Lloris, 36, returned to Tottenham’s starting line-up for the first time since his World Cup final heartbreak on Sunday.

But 50 minutes into the Premier League clash with Aston Villa he made a huge error which led to Emi Buendia’s opening goal.

The Frenchman managed to save a long-range strike from Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, but the ball immediately slipped out of his grasp and straight into the path of Ollie Watkins.

The striker then set the ball back to Buendia, who fired it into the bottom left corner from 12 yards out to give Unai Emery’s team the advantage.

After the game, Sky Sports pundit Souness ripped into the Tottenham goalkeeper for the mishap.

He said: “I’m not a fan of Lloris.

“Since the start of last season, he has made four errors which have led to goals – that’s the worst record of any goalkeeper.

“He is past his sell-by date.”

Fans on social media appeared to agree, with one person tweeting: “Hugo Lloris was very nearly a double world cup winner and he’s not very good.”

Another added: “A serious conversation has to be had about Hugo Lloris.”

A third said: “No point having a keeper that for the last few seasons either has a 9/10 game or a 2/10. He’s one of the most error prone keepers out there. Give me a keeper that is 7/10 throughout the season, rather than this liability.”

While a fourth added: “Can we all agree that Lloris has had his whole career on easy mode. He’s never been a top goalie and got carried to a WC.”

Tottenham went on to lose the match 2-0 after Luiz doubled Villa’s advantage in the 73rd minute.

Tottenham now sit fifth in the Premier League table, 13 points adrift of rivals Arsenal.
