‘Glide effortlessly down the motorway’ – five motors perfect for long commutes including £10k Mercedes

A CAR expert has revealed the best motors for long commutes – including a very comfortable Mercedes.

Matas Buzelis, a motoring guru who works for carVertical, has picked out a handful of cars – with four priced at under £12,000 – that he thinks are perfect for drivers that regularly use the motorway.

When it comes to spending many hours on the road, most car owners simply want something that’s comfortable and makes being stuck behind the wheel as manageable as possible.

What’s more, they want something reliable and robust that can stand the test of time.

Matas said: “Driving a lot of miles every day, such as on a long commute for work, can put a lot of wear and tear on your vehicle.

“Some cars can deal with heavy regular usage better than others.

“If you need a car for long trips, it is recommended that you avoid large SUVs primarily because they’re heavy, thirsty and noisy at high speeds.”

Motorway driving takes up the bulk of road trips, so choosing something great for main roads is what many motorists are looking for.

For this, Matas picks the Mercedes-Benz E Class, BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6.

He explains: “These are the best vehicles for longer trips on motorways or B-roads as they often have perfect sound insulation, very refined suspension and lots of power in cases of overtaking.

“They are also very comfortable to drive; their ability to glide effortlessly down the motorway means they require less energy from the driver, making longer trips less tiring.”

The E Class is the one that might particularly stand out here, as Matas says a used model that’s around five years old can start from as little as £10,000, with a median price of £24,400.

However, there are many other affordable alternatives, including the Ford Mondeo and Skoda Superb – with used, five-year-old models available from £7,500 and £9,500 respectively.

Matas said: “These vehicles are cheaper to purchase but are still good for everyday commutes in urban areas and cities.

“They often have plenty of cabin space, and so are also ideal for young families who need space for child seats.”

For petrolheads looking for a motor more aligned to city commuting, Matas picked out the Toyota Prius and Lexus RX Class.

He said: “If you’re doing a lot of city driving, then you can’t get much better than the Toyota Prius and Lexus RX Class for reliability.

“They’re not as refined at high speed, but they’re ideal for the stop-start nature of driving around a busy urban area.”

The Prius really stands out here, not least because the stylish hybrid can be bought for around £12,000.

What’s more, it remains one of the most popular secondhand cars in the UK.

However, Matas warns potential buyers to make sure they do their homework before parting with their cash.

The expert, whose company carVertical provides data on vehicles ranging from service history to damage records, said: “If you’re buying a second-hand car that needs to do a lot of miles, make sure you check the vehicle’s mileage before you hand over any money.

“It is always worthwhile doing a history check to ensure you are buying a car with a good record.”
