Paul McCartney recalls ’embarrassing’ moment that almost made him quit performing

Paul McCartney has been reminiscing on his early career, revealing one of his more embarrassing on-stage experiences.

In the most recent episode of his podcast, McCartney: A Life in Lyrics, the musician, 81, recalled an incident during one of The Beatles‘ first shows together.

McCartney says despite his musical abilities, one particular guitar solo almost made him quit performing live.

“We had this gig and it was the first thing I ever played, and I was lead guitar player,” he said.

”John [Lennon] was rhythm. I had a solo, and I totally froze. Could not move my fingers. It was just so embarrassing.

“My lead-guitar-playing career melted at that moment, and I said, ‘Well, I’m not doing this again. I’m not cut out for this. I’m no good.'”

Though he didn’t reveal which performance he was referring to, McCartney went on to master various instruments and continue to perform live.

The singer also recently discussed the departure of one of the formative Beatles members, Stuart Sutcliffe, from the band.

“He wasn’t very musical, Stuart. He loved his music, but he just wasn’t,” he said.

Sutcliffe had difficulty transitioning from playing the guitar to the bass. McCartney said he hadn’t spent enough time practising, “so he had to learn from the ground up.”

“All of us had played guitar, so the transition to go to bass wasn’t too hard,” he said.

“We actually used to have to ask him to turn his back to the camera if there were any photos being taken, because we knew that people could see he wasn’t necessarily playing in the same key as us,” McCartney admitted

Sutcliffe was a member of The Beatles from 1960 until 1961; just months after leaving the band, he passed away from a tragic cerebral haemorrhage at 21 years old.
