McGregor took to Twitter to share plans after professing his love for his homeland and enquiring about the ins-and-outs of the Irish presidency.

He said: “Ah f*** ya’s all so I goin on the p.twelve and takin’ my jet to the World Cup final.

“Rock my Italia 90 Irish jersey and grab that World Cup and rip up the left wing like I back playing for Lourdes and there’s a scout present. What they gonna do tackle me

He concluded: “Ireland I love u.”

For many of McGregor’s global fans, these cultural touchstones flew right over their heads.

He followed that tweet up with a simple synopsis, saying: “Translation: “I’m very passionate about Ireland!”

McGregor’s passion for football dates back way before his involvement in MMA.

In 2020, he became the principal sponsor of Lourdes Celtic, the south Dublin club that gave him his first athletic outlet.

McGregor’s World Cup plans come four years after his controversial attendance at the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow where he was a guest of President Vladimir Putin.

The Dubliner went on to hail Putin as “one of the greatest leaders of our time”.

McGregor wrote on his Instagram: “Today I was invited to the World Cup final as a guest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“This man is one of the greatest leaders of our time and I was honored to attend such a landmark event alongside him.

“Today was an honor for me Mr. Putin. Thank you and congratulations on an amazing World Cup.

“Россия вперёд!”

McGregor attended that game with Russian-born fighter and former friend Artem Lobov.

At the time, the pair were close allies, but the former teammates’ relationship has significantly soured in recent months.

Lobov alleges he was the brains behind the Dubliner’s popular drink.

The Russian has now opened court proceedings claiming he is entitled to five per cent of the profits from the Proper Twelve sale.

McGregor labelled Lobov a “RAT” in a now-deleted tweet but continued his tirade on social media again, claiming he was being sued for defamation.

Lobov also alleged McGregor’s father Tony sought to harass him via Instagram.

Lobov’s legal counsel says the pair’s alleged actions are subject of further proceedings, “not least for defamation”.
