Music industry legend, Garry Van Egmond, dies aged 82

Aussie music industry legend Garry Van Egmond has died aged 82 following complications from a recent surgery.

Van Egmond was a tour promoter based in Melbourne, working with some of the industries biggest names throughout his career.

Not only was he the promoter of choice for legendary rock band AC/DC when touring Australia and New Zealand, he also was at the head of some record-breaking shows.

Van Egmond was the man behind Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms tour in 1986.

The tour went on to smash a number of records, selling more than 900,000 at a time when Australia’s population was only 14 million.

For 30 years, the Brothers In Arms tour held the all-time record for tickets sold on a single tour, until Ed Sheeran’s 2018 Divide tour surpassed one million ticket sales for it’s Australian and New Zealand leg.

Van Egmond’s company was also responsible for AC/DC’s 2010 Black Ice tour, selling more than 600,000 tickets across it’s 11 Australian dates.

The legendary promoter worked in the industry for over 50 years, selling over 35 million tickets across an array of shows in Australia, New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan and Japan. 

In 2020, his business, the Van Egmond Group, was acquired by TEG, who have released a statement following Van Egmond’s passing.

“Garry was not only a highly valued colleague but a thoroughly decent person, and a resounding talent with the highest integrity. His legacy will stand the test of time.
