Running outside with a boiled kettle might be the quickest way of defrosting your windscreen.

It’s also one of the riskiest because the windscreen could actually crack due to the extreme temperature change.

Ed Colley, head of Marketing at Autoglass says: “Sudden changes in temperature are one of the most common causes of a windscreen chip turning into a crack, requiring the whole windscreen to be replaced, so anything that involves excessive heat is out of the question.

“While running outside with a boiled kettle might be the quickest route to a clear windscreen, it’s also one of the riskiest, so we’d suggest giving it a hard pass.”

Turning the engine on and heating the windscreen from the inside might appear like a harmless method.

But it’s not the cheapest, given the price rises at the pumps this year.

Some drivers opt for scraping their widescreen with a credit card, but Autoglass warns it can cause small scratches and cause you to fail your MOT.

The best option for Ed is buying a humble ice scraper or simply de-icer spray, which is guaranteed to remove frost and snow.

Another option is covering your windscreen with a piece of polythene the night before.

Also, applying rain-repellent products to the windscreen makes de-icing easier and saves you time on these cold winter mornings.
