CLAY SHOVELER (4.45 Southwell, nap)
The canny veteran trainer turns this two-year-old out quickly after he showed lots of promise in the Brocklesby at Doncaster on Saturday. That was the first two-year-old race of the new season and it has a cracking record of providing future winners. This son of Portamento travelled nicely for a long way before fading in the closing stages on very tiring ground. He will be much happier on this surface and has the benefit of that experience over the whole field. Neil Callan keeps the ride and they can take a step forward from what should be an ideal draw in stall one.
GIVE ME A BOOM (3.05 Newcastle, nb)
Dr Richard Newland will be happy to see the lack of Irish raiders in this contest as he has a real chance with this six-year-old. He has show promise on his two hurdles runs, with seconds at Uttoxeter and then Southwell last time out. He had no issue seeing out this distance there despite the testing conditions and kept going up the straight. This doesn’t look any tougher and his rider’s 5lb claim will come in handy.
EUCHAN FALLS (4.35 Newcastle, treble)
It has taken him a little while to get the hang of chasing but he put in much his best effort when a close-up second at Ayr earlier this month. He looked beaten around the home turn but found his second wind to come home strongly. He is wisely kept to a similar trip and can go close.
LOUP DE MAULDE (3.50 Taunton, Lucky 15)
Looks a good bet for the Lucky 15. He took his form to a new level when tackling fences for the first time since he joined trainer Robbie Llewellyn at Huntingdon last week. He tanked along there and wasn’t stopping at the end of three miles in the mud. Something close to that form would be good enough again under a penalty.
