Looking back on the moment ABBA became international superstars on the Eurovision stage 50 years ago

ABBA have marked 50 years of their chart-topping hit Waterloo, which won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 and rocketed the band to international fame.

Almost as soon as they won, they went from four Swedish musos to global superstars.

The Swedish pop supergroup, made up of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, honoured the anniversary with a sweet letter to fans.

The four members wrote: ”It’s slightly dizzying and deeply humbling to think that millions of you who saw us for the first time in the Eurovision final 1974 have passed our music on not only to one generation, but to several.

“We see evidence of that every time one of us visits ABBA Voyage in London and it’s because of this we can celebrate the 50th Anniversary of that event in the knowledge that our songs still resonate around the world.”

ABBA’s members confessed that it’s hard to believe 50 years have passed since they won Eurovision in Brighton, England back in 1974.

Their winning song, Waterloo, likens a fictional romance to Napoleon’s surrender at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

It was a hit among the Eurovision juries around Europe and led Sweden to win the annual song contest for the first time ever. It also propelled ABBA to international fame.

“Many of you were there from the very start and have followed us ever since – for over half a century!” the band wrote in their letter today.

“Music you discover and learn to love when you grow up or even later in life has a way of staying with you forever.

“We share that experience with you and to know that our music has become a constant in your lives is a wonderful thing.”

Fältskog, Ulvaeus, Andersson, and Lyngstad added that they felt “blessed” by the outpouring of love from their fans to mark the anniversary.

ABBA fans hosted a flash mob dance in Brighton, while Swedish Television hosted a tribute concert attended by the nation’s king and queen in honour of the occasion.

Though none of the band members attended the event, called En Fest För ABBA (A Party For ABBA), they were certainly feeling the love.

“To say thank you for what you’re giving us without sounding trivial is not easy and this is not a moment for triviality,” the band’s letter continued.

“It is a happy and at the same time solemn moment and we can only hope that you understand how deeply grateful we are for a long, successful career and for your steadfast loyalty and support through the years. Thank you!”

ABBA was formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1972 and enjoyed years of international success before quietly going their separate ways around 1982.

The band reunited in 2016 and have performed together several times since.
