How ‘mysterious phone call’ led me to pair of keys buried in FIELD & a free Fiat 500 – the car was mine in hours

A MAN was led to a pair of keys buried in a field and gained a free Fiat 500, thanks to a mysterious phone call.

Simon Muirhead bagged the prize thanks to a treasure hunt held by Scrap Car Comparison, an online marketplace that matches the owners of scrap and salvage cars with companies that buy them for disposal.

The hunt was constructed around the What3Words navigation system, which has chopped up the entire world into three-square-metre boxes which are identified by three randomly generated words which create a unique but easy to remember address.

Using this system, the centre of the field at the Yankee Stadium in New York becomes snap.bids.chips.

The competition posted three clues, that when deciphered correctly, would reveal the three words giving the location.

These were:

I’m usually white, but I’m not snow. I’m sometimes covered in enamel, but I’m not a tooth. I sometimes have a clawfoot, but I’m not an eagle. What am I? (plural)

IT professionals based in the Manchester area Alex Rawson and Danny Lane teamed up to try to crack the clues once they were posted on October 18, 2022, at 9am.

But having solved the riddles, they discovered the location was around 100 miles away in Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire.

Realising they would never get there in time to claim the prize, they decided to pass the details on to someone closer who would be able to win.

After a quick search the came across a likely candidate.

Rawson said: “We looked at the location on Google Maps and saw there was a business nearby called RM Roofing.

“As we work for a company called RM Education ourselves, this felt like fate.”

The call was answered by Muirhead but he needed convincing it wasn’t someone playing a prank although he eventually was talked round into giving it a shot.

However, they weren’t the only ones who had solved the puzzled and several people had made it over to the farm where Muirhead was sent.

But thanks to help from Rawson and Lane, over the phone, he was the first person to uncover the keys at 9.45am.

Muirhead said: “I can’t quite believe it. I was just about to leave for work and I had a call from an unknown number, then the next thing I know they’re talking me through how to find the keys to a brand-new car.

“I almost lost out on it as other people were turning up to try and find them, but I’m so pleased I dug them up before anyone else.

Rawson added: “The moment he found them; we were celebrating together.

“It felt so good to spread some good fortune and play a part in making someone’s day. We’re over the moon to have helped someone get a brand-new car.”
