And the 11th defeat of their league campaign leaves them 19 points off top, as well as 11 off a Champions League spot.
The pressure is now building on Ten Hag to justify his many signings at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman has a net transfer spend of £331million since taking charge nearly two years ago.
And United find themselves toeing the Financial Fair Play line as a result, with the club unable to afford any signings in the previous January transfer window.
The players Ten Hag bought in aren’t showing their worth on the pitch either, with United dominated by City today.
Reflecting on Ten Hag’s spending, Cates posed a question to Neville about why the big money signings are not working out.
This caused the pundit and ex-Red Devil to complain that it’s a question he’s tired of answering.
But Cates came back with a withering response that finally got Neville talking.

Cates first said: “There’s always that question at United, where has the money been spent? Why aren’t we seeing it on the pitch?”
Neville replied: “We’ve talked about this night and day. It feels like… We’re just tired, Kelly!”
This caused a raucous response in the studio as fellow pundits Roy Keane and Micah Richards laughed over each other.
But Cates was not going to accept Neville’s answer.
With a smile on her own face, she fired back: “Well stop talking about it when United aren’t playing, and answer it when they are!”
This caused Neville to finally answer the question.
He said: “There’s the Pep and Klopp factors, these two unbelievable managers that get the best out of teams, and when they’re still here you can’t compete against them.
“I come back to the fact are we on the righty journey? Going in right direction. Can you see a style of play and performance level that something’s building?
“Last season was good in sense of winning a trophy, getting to the Champions League, the FA Cup final, it’s good in terms of setting a foundation.
“This season I wouldn’t expect them to challenge, but to be in sixth, so far off..?
“They’ve lost 11 games in the league, inconsistent, is this because that’s what happens in a second season, and he (Ten Hag) needs a third?
“Or is that what they are and what he is? That’s the challenge Ratcliffe will have.”
