Aussie Sex/Life star Adam Demos reflects on his Hollywood career: ‘I count my lucky stars’

Aussie actor Adam Demos has had huge success in Hollywood, recently starring in the hit shows UnREAL and Sex/Life.

He’s also ventured into films, starring in Falling Inn Love and A Perfect Pairing.

And now, Demos is voicing a character in the Audible Original audiobook, Lonely Harts Radio, co-starring Erin Richards.

Despite his success – and heartthrob status – Demos is as humble and down-to-earth as ever, telling 9Honey Celebrity he’s “very grateful” his Hollywood career is “working out”.

Demos, 38, hails from Wollongong, in the Illawarra region of NSW, and previously worked in construction before hitting the big time.

“I feel very grateful that it’s working out,” he says.

“The first initial dream is just to be able to pay your bills as an actor and to work on what I have, I’m just grateful.

“It’s an interesting business and I count my lucky stars I call it work.”

Talking about when he took his first leap into acting, Demos says the change of careers “scared me in the right ways”.

In the audiobook, Demos portrays Aussie DJ Ru Tattersall, who chases his dreams in the Big Apple in ’90s New York, and it’s something he said he can relate to.

“He wanted to take a chance and challenge himself career wise,” Demos explains.

“I come from a construction background and thinking I would give acting a go and taking a leap of faith, so I related to that, as that can come with a lot of nerves.

“I’ve never done an audiobook before, it scared me a little bit as it’s a new challenge, but I wanted to try it and give it a go and I love the story.”

“There’s a lot of chaos going on in the world and these stories are nice to have a bit of escape, it puts a smile on people’s faces.”

Demos lives in Los Angeles now with Sex/Life co-star and partner Sarah Shahi, who he has described as “the love of his life”.

Despite living overseas, he loves coming back home to Australia whenever he can, and loves when American actress Shahi, 44, visits his hometown with him.

“I’m such a proud Aussie and I’m so proud of where I come from,” he says.

“In Wollongong, my mates and my mum [are there] and to share that with the person you love and to see my hometown and country and see the beauty through her eyes, it gives me another appreciation for it.”

He adds with a laugh, “She’s so blown away about how nice people are, how beautiful it is, and there’s no road rage down there in Wollongong!”

Demos and Shahi worked together on Netflix’s Sex/Life and fell in love.

“I never had a visual of where it would happen, I’m one of those people open to the beauties of life,” he says about their romance and how they first met.

“I didn’t really think it’ll ever be a set as it’s work, but the universe works in mysterious ways and that’s how it worked out and I’m obviously very thankful for it.”

Shahi adds: ”He’s the most romantic person!”

“I think the person you’re in love with or fancy brings that out in you,” Demos says.
