MANCHESTER UNITED legend Wayne Rooney gave a wry smile when asked about a possible switch to boxing.

The former England captain, 38, is out of work after being sacked by Birmingham last month.

Rooney lasted just 15 games after winning just twice at St Andrew’s.

And he has since been tipped to make a stunning appearance in the world of boxing.

Social media scrappers Misfits are keen on getting Wazza in the ring for a game-changing experience in front of fans.

The iconic striker is no stranger to the sport, having previously been KO’d by pal Phil Bardsley in a joke fight on his kitchen floor.

And Rooney was questioned about a potential boxing career when he appeared on the latest episode of The Overlap.

He was joined by Roy Keane, Gary Neville, Jill Scott and Jamie Carragher for the popular podcast.

And Rooney could resist cracking a wry grin as he was questioned about boxing, with the five-time Premier League winner eventually insisting he wants to stay in football.

Neville asked: “Are you going to be a boxer? Are you going to do a fight?”

A smiling Rooney answered: “You never know! No, they’ve been in touch and asked a question.

“But I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.

“They’ve been in touch, Misfits have been all over the news. I want to get back into management, that’s my focus.

“My main focus is getting back into football.”

SunSport exclusively revealed this month that Rooney is eyeing a sensational move to Saudi Arabia to resurrect his managerial career.

Former England pal Steven Gerrard is already managing in the Middle East.

And after taking charge of MLS side DC United, Rooney would jump at the chance of sitting in the Saudi dugout.
