As part of the expansion, 30 new shops and restaurants will be built over a 30,000 square metre space at the airport.

The outlets will feature premium brands from both Austria and the rest of the world.

In addition to the revamped shopping area, a spacious leisure area and exclusive lounges will also be constructed.

Additionally, Vienna Airport will also get 18 new bus gates, which will aim to make transfer connections between gates F, G, C and D easier.

A new state-of-the-art security checkpoint will also be built.

The project is expected to cost €420million (£360million), with construction work already underway.

Preparation work on the project began in July 2023, with the revamped terminal scheduled to commence operations in 2027.

Once the work is complete, Vienna Airport is expected to join the ranks of the top airports in the world.

Julian Jäger, joint Member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG said: “Thanks to the new Southern Expansion project, we are laying the groundwork for Vienna Airport to join the ranks of the top airports and achieve 5-Star status.

“In the future, our passengers will experience a substantial improvement of the quality of their stay in a new terminal environment thanks to a considerable enlargement of the shopping and restaurant offering featuring renowned Austrian and international premium brands.”

As it stands, Ryanair and Wizz Air operate direct flights from UK cities like London and Edinburgh to Vienna, Austria, for as little as £15 for a one-way ticket.

Plenty of other airports in Europe are also being revamped in a bid to increase capacity.
