‘Prankster’ crashes Oppenheimer acceptance speech at the BAFTAs

The 2024 BAFTA Film Awards saw it all.

From Prince William’s arrival without the Princess of Wales to David Beckham diving fans with the word “soccer”, there was a lot to keep up with.

But a bizarre moment at the end of the ceremony, when the Oppenheimer cast’s acceptance speech was interrupted, went unnoticed.

The film took home the coveted best film award on the night. But just as Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy and the film’s producers made it on stage, a YouTuber reportedly joined them, too.

“A social media prankster was removed by security last night after joining the winners of the final award on stage,” the BAFTAs wrote in a statement to Variety“We are taking this very seriously, and don’t wish to grant him any publicity by commenting further.”

On stage during the unscripted moment were the film’s producers Emma Thomas and and Charles Roven, director Christopher Nolan, actor Cillian Murphy and presenter Michael J. Fox.

According to Variety, the incident went unnoticed by most as the unnamed individual stood among the cast and didn’t say a word through the acceptance speech.

The man was then reportedly approached by security after leaving the stage.

Despite the unnerving cameo at the end, Oppenheimer had a successful night at the BAFTAs, sweeping the awards show with an impressive seven wins.

Murphy took home the best actor gong for his portrayal of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the historical drama.

In his acceptance speech, Murphy thanked his ‘Oppenhomies’, producer Emma Thomas and his director Christopher Nolan, who he has worked with on six films now.

“Thank you for seeing something in me that I probably didn’t see in myself,” Murphy said.

“Chris, thank you for that extraordinary, exhilarating script and for always pushing me and always demanding excellence because that’s what you deliver, time after time again,” he continued, speaking directly to Noland.

Murphy also took the time to thank his ‘best friends’ – his wife Yvonne McGuinness and their sons Malachy and Aran.
