‘Knowledge is power’ as mechanic reveals 99% of drivers don’t know what dashboard lights REALLY mean

A MECHANIC has urged people to learn more about their cars in order to stop them getting ripped off when getting their motors repaired.

Scotty Kilmer also revealed that 99 per cent of drivers have no idea what it actually means when your dashboard lights turn on and that you need to stop overpaying to get it fixed.

Scotty Kilmer revealed that 99 per cent of drivers don’t know what dashboard lights really mean and it is costing them cashTikTok

Kilmer says that when your check engine light comes on the ABS and and traction control systems automatically flash as wellTikTok

Kilmer started his incredibly informative video saying: “Even if you’re not going to fix your own car, knowledge is power and if you know more about your car you have less of a chance of getting taken advantage of when your car needs repairs.”

He said that sometimes issues in your car aren’t always as they seem as many problems are simply safety issues built in to your car.

The TikTok expert said: “If you have a problem and your check engine light comes on, automatically that will turn off the ABS and traction control systems as it’s a computer safety thing.”

This means extra lights will flash up warning you that your car isn’t up to scratch even though you only really have one issue.

If you go to a mechanic with all three lights showing there is a good chance they will fix everything even if all that needs fixing is the engine – costing you a whole lot of money.

Kilmer has spent years posting on TikTok and YouTube about clever car secrets and hacks.

After spending over 50 years as a mechanic, Kilmer thinks that everyone should have “a little bit of a mechanic’s knowledge” to stop them from overspending on their car repairs.

He has gained a huge audience of over 50,000 followers who all love being told where they’re going wrong so they can save some cash.

Another one of Kilmer’s tips involves the car’s heater.

He says that a lot of time if your motor isn’t warming up well enough it could be down to the amount of coolant you have.

If your cooler level is too low then often your heater won’t work properly.

Kilmer says in his long career as a mechanic he has fixed “hundreds of cars” by just filling up their coolant bottle.

Another common mistake he found drivers make is getting batteries that have been sitting out for too long before even being put in your car.

After comparing a car’s battery to some eggs, Kilmer notes that both have a sell by date on them indicating when they go bad.

He uses the clever analogy: “When you’re buying a battery for your car pretend you’re at the grocery store.

“Demand to see the date of the battery and try to get one that’s less than a month old because that wouldn’t of deteriorated that much.

“Always get a fresh battery when you buy one.”

The Sun previously told how Scotty revealed how motorists can save hundreds of pounds when running the air con in their cars.

He has also recommended five cars to buy for less than £4,000 each – including Toyota Corollas and Camrys and Honda Accords and Civics.

Another car mechanic has recently revealed his useful trick that can also save drivers big money on repair jobs.

TikToker Checkenginechuckllc is warning motorists that they shouldn’t allow leaves to gather under their car bonnets as it can affect the running of the vehicle.

Having dead leaves wedged near your windscreen wipers can cause a build-up of dirt resulting in a drainage block.

He has a quick and free trick to help drivers check if this has happened – using a bottle of water.

The mechanic also compared a car’s engine to some eggs saying drivers need to always check the sell by dateTikTok
