I’m a former Man Utd star… leaving Carrington wasn’t pleasant and I knew I’d never come back but I have no regrets

EX-MANCHESTER UNITED star Angel Gomes has lifted the lid on his exit from the club.

Gomes, 23, was tipped to have a bright future at Old Trafford during his time in the Red Devils Academy, whom he had been with since he was six years old.

He was handed his debut by Jose Mourinho aged just 16, however, things did not work out for the former England Under-21 star.

And frustrated with a lack of playing chances in the first team – where he made ten appearances in all – he sealed a free transfer to Lille in August 2020.

Gomes went on loan to Boavista on his first season but has since made himself an integral part of the Lille team.

Nearly four years on from his Carrington exit, Gomes has now opened up on his departure.

Speaking to 90Football in France, via Le Petit Lillois, he said: “On the last day, it was difficult to have to say goodbye to everyone, finish training and be surrounded by your team-mates who you’ve played with since you were little.

“Having to leave… It was a difficult moment leaving Carrington knowing that I would never go back.

“It was the only home I’d ever known. Coming back home wasn’t pleasant and neither was getting all my stuff back.”

Gomes also explained his rationale behind joining Lille.

He added: “I was looking for more playing time, more consistency and a plan for my future.

“I came to Lille, who offered me a good structure and a good project. I have no regrets in life.

“I decided to take a step into the unknown, but I’m happy with the decision I made.”

Gomes has certainly been rewarded playing time this season.

He has played 30 times in all competitions, scoring twice in the Europa Conference League chipping in with five assists across Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France.

However, Gomes has not ruled out a return to Old Trafford, previously saying it would be a dream to return “home” to the Theatre of Dreams.

Gomes, originally a winger or creative ten, has shown his versatility by starring as a holding midfielder for the Young Three Lions.

He also revealed how a Mourinho blast in 2017 left Gomes on the verge of tears.
