His goal was Rice’s last involvement of the match before being replaced by Mohamed Elneny.
It was his first league return to the Hammers since leaving to join Arsenal in the summer.
Rice added his name to the scoresheet in the 65th minute as he pounced onto a loose ball around 30 yards from goal.
The midfielder lashed the ball first time past Alphonse Areola and into the top corner.
He immediately held his hands up apologetically and refused to celebrate against his former club.
After graduating from the Hammers academy, Rice made 245 senior appearances for West Ham.
The 25-year-old also captained the club as they won the Europa Conference League last season before his move to North London.
However, he was still met with boos from the home supporters on Sunday afternoon.

Rice was substituted off by Mikel Arteta after scoring, with Arsenal 6-0 up at the London Stadium.
Goals from William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel and Leandro Trossard fired the Gunners into a four-goal half-time lead.
The dominant display saw thousands of home fans leave the stadium at half-time, with the mass exodus caught by the Sky Sports cameras.
Saka added a second after half-time before Rice’s long-range strike completed the scoring.
