‘It can’t have happened again!’ – Shrewd trainer behind infamous racing gamble lands another as 16-1 horse wins at 2-1

TRAINER Stuart Williams pulled off yet another huge gamble at Lingfield on Wednesday as Huberts Dream returned the 2-1 well-backed favourite, after being widely available at 16-1 the night before.

The son of Oasis Dream had too much speed for his rivals as he made all to win the opening the division of the talkSPORT Powered By Fans Nursery Handicap by a comfortable two and half lengths .

Top trainer Williams was all smiles after landing another gamble – this time at Lingfield

If you were studying the formbook it would have been hard to have been confident on the chances of Huberts Dream.

He had never finished better than sixth and was last seen finishing at the back of the field at Nottingham in October.

However, if you looked a little harder the signs might have been there as Epsom Derby-winning jockey Richard Kingscote rode the horse for the first time.

Kingscote and Williams have been a good combination this year operating at a healthy 23 per cent strike-rate.

Several well known racing tipsters were also keen on his chances, which added to the strong market support.

Williams was grilled after the race by TV presenter Matt Chapman, who jokingly asked why he wasn’t told about the gamble.

Williams kept a straight face and replied: “The owners were on.”

The owners of Huberts Dream, Opulence Thoroughbreds, are big supporters of Williams with ten horses in his yard.

Williams also added cheekily ‘we were quite hopeful he would be given a mark where he could do something useful over the winter’.

With the big market support Williams was summoned to the stewards room where he informed them: “The colt may have appreciated the drop back in trip to 7 furlongs for his all-weather debut”.

However, this isn’t the first time that a Williams-trained horse has been the subject of a bookie bashing.

Back in 2004 multi-millionaire punter Patrick Veitch is believed to have won £500,000 on his horse Exponential.

The Williams’ runner opened at 100-1 but was backed all the way down to 8-1 before winning a Class 5 sprint by a length – and a legend was made.

This gamble seemed to share several similarities with the Huberts Dream as both were well-beaten on their previous starts.

Williams’ stable are currently in great form after saddling three winners in the past week.

He looks a name to watch out over the coming days in your race card as the all-weather season gets into gear this winter.
