Man Utd star Andre Onana considering international future after disastrous return to Cameroon team for Afcon

ANDRE ONANA is considering his international future after his return to the Cameroon team ended in disaster.

The Manchester United keeper, 27, agonised over the decision to leave his new club and play in this month’s African Cup of Nations.

But he featured in just one of their four matches before they crashed out to Nigeria in the last 16 over the weekend with his COUSIN, Nimes goalie Fabrice Ondo, preferred instead.

And he has now returned to the North West to prepare for tomorrow night’s trip to Wolves where he will weigh his options up in the coming weeks

Onana informed United he was retired from international football when he made the £47 million switch from Inter in the summer.

He had originally called time on playing for his country following a row with president Samuel Eto’o and coach Rigobert Song at the World Cup in 2022.

However he was persuaded to go back for a vital AFCON qualifier in the autumn.

Then decided he wanted to play at the finals.

United and Cameroon came to a compromise that he would stay in Manchester an extra few days.

He then missed the opening game due to travel problems.

Onana played in the defeat to Senegal but was then axed for the final two matches against Gambia and Nigeria – who put the Indomitable Lions out.

His return means the only game he missed was the FA Cup win at League Two Newport on Sunday.

But United were well covered as Turkey international Altay Bayindir deputised between the sticks.

ANDRE ONANA’S AFCON TIMELINE

It’s been an eventful few days for the Manchester United stopper:

Jan 14 – Onana plays in Man Utd’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham before jumping straight on a private jet to head to Ivory Coast for Afcon.

Jan 15 – Cameroon drew with Guinea 1-1 in their opening group match but Onana was dropped from the squad completely after flight problems meant he arrived late. Pictures of him allegedly being ‘calmed down’ by El Hadji Diouf then emerged.

Jan 19 – The goalkeeper starts the second group game but it ends in major disappointment as his side suffered a 3-1 loss to Senegal.

Jan 23 – Cameroon triumph 3-2 over Gambia in their must-win final group game to advance to the knockouts but Onana had to watch the action from the bench after he was dropped.

Jan 24 – Reports emerged that the ex-Ajax and Inter Milan stopper had considered quitting Afcon and returning to United following a blazing row with Cameroon football chief Samuel Eto’o. It was claimed that he had been blamed for two of the goals in the Senegal defeat which led to the bust-up before the Gambia clash.

Jan 27 – Onana is left on the bench again for the round of 16 match against Nigeria in favour of Ondoa, but his and his country’s Afcon is ended as they slip to a 2-0 setback.
