The Levelling Up Department is therefore likely to give councils a green light to hike taxes by the maximum possible 4.99 per cent from April.
Any higher increase would require the approval of local voters by referendum.
That would likely add about £100 to a typical band D council tax bill, according to the Guardian.
It comes after Michael Gove unveiled an extra £600 million local government bail out last week as councils across England struggle with inflation and poor management.
Labour have accused the Government of “papering over the cracks.”
Millions of people won’t have to pay a key household bill for two months from February.
This is because council tax is usually paid over 10 months instead of 12.
If you pay your council tax in 10 instalments, you’ll be rewarded with 60 days where you don’t need to fork out.
This falls in February and March and means you won’t get a bill in these months.
