Jay Leno files for conservatorship over wife of 44 years, Mavis

Television host Jay Leno has reportedly filed for conservatorship over his wife of 44 years, Mavis Leno.

According to TMZ, the former Tonight Show host reportedly filed documents in court on Friday (Saturday in Australia) to become the conservator of his wife’s estate.

An insider told the publication that Mavis, 77, is supposedly suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, and the filing is on the basis of her illness.

The couple have been married for over four decades, having tied the knot in 1980 after meeting at the Comedy Store through mutual friends in the 1970s.

The 73-year-old previously said that he was “not good at dating”, but he ended up finding the perfect companion for him.

In a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he stated that people should “marry the person you wish you could be”, and that he “married the perfect person.”

Mavis, who is now a philanthropist, said in a 1987 profile of her comedian husband, “I always had this idea that I would never get married … But with Jay, I began to realise that this was the first time I was ever with someone where I had a perfect, calm sense of having arrived at my destination.”

The pair never had children, which Mavis takes “full credit” for, recalling in a 2014 Washington Post interview telling her mother at age seven that she would never get married or have kids.

“To me, this is the way women get caught,” she said.

Despite this, she stood by her husband for over 40 years, including during his recent vehicular accidents.

In November 2022 Leno and his friend were in a car explosion that melted off half his face. He was treated for ten days with skin grafts and now jokes about his “new face”.

But just two months after this incident, the comedian broke his collarbones, his two ribs and cracked both kneecaps in a motorcycle accident.

The comedian was driving a vintage motorcycle in Las Vegas last January when he cut through a parking lot where there was an unmarked wire hanging across it.

“I didn’t see it until it was too late. It just clotheslined me and, boom, knocked me off the bike,” he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal
