‘Reach to the sky’ cry fans as Tesla’s newest model has gear selector on the CEILING & ‘genius’ four-wheel steering

TESLA fans have joked they’ll have to “reach to the sky” as the brand’s newest model is set to include a gear selector on the ceiling.

The £32,000 Cybertruck is one of the most unusual motors to be produced so far by the EV giant – it’s even bulletproof.

Abdullah, a former automotive engineer who runs the popular motoring YouTube channel Pushing Pistons, gave his followers a look inside the vehicle and a quick tutorial on how to drive it.

In the video, uploaded to TikTok, Abdullah hops into a Cybertruck to give viewers a sense of how different it is from a normal car.

The first thing to get over is that very little about the truck is mechanical, with basically everything controlled by buttons or from the large infotainment touchscreen.

The doors have no handles and are opened by a touchpad on the side of the car and there is no ignition port once you hop in.

You fire up the electric powertrain simply by pressing the brake, with all the normal functions of a key fob performed by the Tesla mobile app.

Pretty much every element of your driving experience is customisable from within the cockpit.

When it comes to the basics, the gear selector has been removed from the normal central location and placed on the ceiling above the driver’s head.

A tap of the illuminated buttons lets you switch between drive, neutral, reverse and park.

The hazard lights are up there too.

The rest is largely controlled by the touchscreen, which has some futuristic features of its own.

Standard driving modes include sport, comfort and off-road, while top-end models also include “beast mode”, which boosts the power to give the chunky truck a 0-60 time of just 2.6s.

That’s as quick as many ultra-expensive supercars.

Drivers can also go for custom mode, where elements of the other four can be programmed to co-exist.

Other neat bits of tech include the option to raise or lower the ride height through a range of around 17 inches, as well as the all-wheel steering system.

This allows the Cybertruck to be extra manoeuvrable by turning all four wheels at the same time, rather than just the front or rear pair.

And it’s enabled by the fact that, being an EV, it’s set up on a drive-by-wire system where the steering wheel has no physical connection to the wheels.

Instead, everything is done by electrical signals fed into the car’s computer system.

Social media commenters dubbed this “genius”.

One wrote: “Changing gears by reaching to the sky.”

Another added: “I think it’s awesome.”

It comes after Tesla was reported to be set to release a sub-£20,000 EV, codenamed Redwood, by the end of 2025.

The entry-level variant, expected to be called the Model 2, is believed to be on the cusp of production, six years after company boss Elon Musk promised it.
