They branded the gesture an “insult” to hard-working families.

Faltec Europe Ltd distributed a leaflet among staff saying a selection of potted snacks would be on offer in the canteen.

But the giveaway went sour with employees at their huge car parts plant in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear.

The food items on offer cost about £1 each to buy in supermarkets.

The leaflet says: “This winter, while we are going through the cost-of- living crisis, the Employee Forum has agreed with the management team that Faltec will offer a free hot meal for those that require it.

“This will be one of the following: Pot Noodle Pots, Porridge Pots, Pasta Pots.’’

One worker said, sarcastically: “This will go a long way to help feed their family and heat their home at Christmas!”

Faltec, which has an HQ in Japan, boasts a global workforce of 3,000.

General Affairs Manager Bruce Mair said: “We’ve had nothing but positive feedback.

The company also decided to provide free toiletries, hot showers and sanitary products.”

He added that the 420 staff had also had a seven per cent pay rise.
