Why a red passport cover could save you from ruining your holiday

A RED passport cover could save you from ruining your holiday, according to one frequent flyer.

Celia Paerels urged passengers to make sure to deck out anything they can in “shocking scarlet” to avoid any potential mishaps.

Writing in response to a New York Times appeal for travel hacks from its readers, Ms Paerels, from Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, shared a handy tip for remembering your essentials.

Forgetting your passport can throw your entire trip into chaos and even leave you forced to call the whole thing off.

But the 62-year-old has found a way to never misplace the vital document again – by making sure it is covered in a striking colour.

She explained: “Everybody clues into red.

“If you see a cardinal [bird not Catholic], you’ll know it’s a cardinal.

“You don’t notice a sparrow.”

Ms Paerel’s logic is that the bright red cover will stand out both to passengers and to airline staff.

Not only can it help you remember to pick up your passport, but also to find it if you leave it tucked in the seat pocket or it falls down the side of the cushion.

And that can apply to anything from clothing, to glasses cases to earphone cords.

Other NYT readers chipped in with their top tips for travel success too.

Advice included packing sweets to endear yourself to the crew on long-haul flights, using air miles to book backup flights in case something goes wrong and keeping in mind the little-known lever below the mirror in some aeroplane bathrooms which opens a compartment housing extra loo roll.

It comes after a flight attendant explained a potentially life-saving reason that passengers shouldn’t be allowed to wear headphones on flights.
