It’s been suggested that using an onion can save you time on frosty mornings
Numerous hacks have been shared around to help speed things up over the years, yet people are always looking for more.
But this latest tip from LeaseCar.uk could top the lot – although it may leave you teary.
That’s because the car rental service has advised drivers to apply an onion to their windscreen before they head to bed.
Yep, you read that right.
By chopping an onion in half and rubbing it across the windows of the car, a coating will supposedly prevent ice from sticking to the screen.
LeaseCar.uk’s Tim Alcock told the Express: “Using an ice scraper to clear the vehicle can have you standing for 15 to 20 minutes which can be a nightmare when you’re on a tight schedule.
“That’s why we suggest using typical household products, like lemons, salt and onions which can help defrost windscreens.”
While the thought of driving a car that smells of onions is off-putting, the pros may outweigh the cons as temperatures prepare to drop.
Perhaps one of the stronger arguments for using an onion is their cheapness compared to other car products.
You can buy an onion for as little as 12p at Tesco – and prices like that are hard to ignore.
Especially with freezing temperatures already setting in, with snow even recorded across some parts of the UK on Monday.
And Brits have been urged to brace for more ice and snow after the Met Office issued a fresh yellow weather warning continuing into the rest of the week.
With this in mind, it might be worth popping into your kitchen or up to your local supermarket.
LeaseCar.uk also claim the same trick can be used with a potato on the inside of the windscreen to prevent condensation from forming.
If you’re looking to go even cheaper to find the perfect solution to de-icing your windscreen, however, then a motors whizz has shared their cheap 2p hack that works in seconds.
The incredible time and money-saving motor trick involves using a food baggie filled with warm water, ensuring you set off in the morning without any hassle.
But drivers have also been warned about the risk of an £80 fine if they’re caught using a popular de-icing hack this month.
One particular solution could be costly both to you and the environment due to a little-known road law.
