Golden Globes host defends opening monologue after jokes fall flat: ‘I got the gig 10 days ago’

Golden Globes host Jo Koy defended his opening monologue after a number of his jokes fell flat.

The Barbie movie cast looked less than impressed by the American stand-up comedian’s jokes at their expense, some which didn’t get the laugh he was after.

Their reactions lit up social media during the awards show more than the 52-year-old’s monologue itself.

Before Koy began his Barbie chat he touched on the “Barbenheimer” craze that played out last year when Oppenheimer and Barbie opened on the same weekend and competed for box office glory.

Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and Barbie is about a plastic doll with big boobies.”

He then went on to say he didn’t want to sound creepy before telling the audience “it was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll” before flipping the script to say he was talking about Ryan Gosling, who played Ken in the movie, not Margot Robbie.

“Just something about your eyes, Ryan … it’s not all about you Margot!” he said about Gosling.

He continued saying: “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet – or what casting directors call character acting.”

That particular joke drew groans and prompted Koy to defend his humour, telling the audience: “Some I wrote, some other people wrote” about his jokes.

“Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”

Acting legends including Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, who were seated front of stage also appeared appalled at the host’s jokes, with people watching on at home sharing clips of their reactions.

Koy also took aim at Robert De Niro having a child at the age of 80.

After declaring himself a big fan of the iconic actor, Koy asked how he managed to get his girlfriend Tiffany Chen pregnant, suggesting it was CGI.

The couple took the jibe in good humour with them both seen on camera laughing.

The host went on to single out actor Barry Keoghan, referring to his nude scene in Saltburn.

“Where is your penis seated? Down front? That was the real star of the show,” he told the actor who lowered his head as soon as his name was mentioned.

Koy tried to then link it back to Barbie, saying appendages on display was what was missing from their movie.

Some fans on social media joked about bringing back previous hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, saying: “Never send a man to do a woman’s job”.

“Missing them right about now,” another viewer wrote about the female comedy duo, who have hosted the awards show four times together.
