When a new iOS update for your iPhone comes out, it usually introduces new features and bug fixes.

But it typically closes dangerous security holes that hackers can use to gain control of your device – or your private info.

The latest major iPhone update is called iOS 16, and it’s important that everyone who can download it does just that.

But only 68.95% of iPhones are running iOS 16, according to new research by Mixpanel.

Analysis of apps that use Mixpanel tech reveal just under a third of iPhone users haven’t updated yet.

Around 24.78% of iPhones are on iOS 15, with the remainder using earlier software.

The upside is that having nearly 70% of eligible iPhone owners using iOS 16 is still very high.

Figures on Google updates for Android are almost always far lower.

But by not updating to the latest version of iOS, you’re putting yourself at risk.

Apple said: “Keeping your software up to date is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your Apple product’s security.”

Here’s a list of all the iOS 16 (and iOS 16.1.1) supported devices:

Before you update

Before any major iPhone update, you should make sure to back up your phone.

That’s because things can easily go wrong during an update, and you’ll want to avoid losing your precious data – like photos or videos.

To do this, simply head into the iCloud settings on your iPhone and turn on the ‘iCloud Backup’ feature.

Alternatively, plug your phone into iTunes and choose the ‘Backup Now’ option.
