As millions begin to hit the road for the festive season, the AA predicts Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd to be the two busiest days for motorists driving home to spend Christmas with loved ones.
And the Met Office weather alert warns: “Strong winds across a large swathe of the country Thursday, causing some travel disruption.”
It adds: “Some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.
“Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected.”
With the weather outside set to be frightful, the RAC, working with the Met Office, has offered four tips to drivers that can help them take care when travelling.
They advise motorists to “stick to main roads if possible” as you’re less likely to be exposed to fallen branches and debris.
A further tip is grip your steering wheel firmly with both hands to improve your car control.
It’s also advisable to keep enough room either side of your vehicle so you can account for it being blown sideways, while also being aware of gaps between trees, buildings or bridges where you are more likely to be exposed to side winds.

The iconic motor, which gained worldwide fame after the same model was featured in the Back to the Future films, was discovered with a nest of mice living in its rear interor.
