Van de Beek, 26, cost £40m when he joined the Red Devils from Ajax in 2020.
But the Dutchman netted just twice in 35 league outings under three different managers.
And even a loan spell at Everton failed to reignite his Premier League career.
However, Van de Beek is now set for a lifeline from Germany after Frankfurt made a loan offer this week.
Fabrizio Romano claims the playmaker has verbally accepted the Bundesliga club’s proposal.
And Frankfurt will now cough up a fee to land Van de Beek until the summer.
The move could yet be made permanent too, with Frankfurt agreeing an optional £13m fee in 2024.
Should they trigger the clause, it would see United make a huge £27m loss on Van de Beek.

He netted 40 goals in his final three seasons at Ajax and was expected to make a similar impact at Old Trafford.
But Van de Beek failed to find his rhythm under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and was pushed further down the pecking order by Ralf Rangnick.
Even fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag failed to get a tune out of him.
And Van de Beek will be hoping for better fortunes at Frankfurt alongside stars including World Cup winner Mario Gotze and goalie Kevin Trapp.
