He held the WWE and World Heavyweight Championship facing the likes of John Cena, Randy Orton and CM Punk.
But his career began to take a downfall in 2016 when he left the WWE following a fallout with the hierarchy.
Del Rio would compete on various independent promotions but ran into personal problems in recent years.
He was arrested in May 2020, in San Antonio, Texas after allegedly battering and sexually assaulting his girlfriend.
Del Rio was charged with one count of sexual assault and another of assault causing bodily harm, later released on $50,000 bail.
The wrestler and ex-MMA fighter was indicted by a grand jury and formally charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault.
But his trial was delayed several times until the charges were ultimately dropped in December 2021.
Del Rio – now going by the name Alberto El Patron – is still competing on small hall shows.

According to the Cagematch database, he defeated Sam Adonis at the Plantando Bandera event, held at the Athletic Complex in Dallas.
Fans were quick to comment on Del Rio’s latest fall from grace.
One said: “How the mighty have fallen: Alberto Del Rio going from Wrestlemania to high school gyms.”

One followed up: “This guy went from being at Wrestlemania and being WWE Champion multiple times to working high school gyms…”
