TEMPLEGATE tackles Thursday’s racing confident of building the bank for Cheltenham’s two-day meeting starting on Friday.

HEROS (3.15 Taunton, nap)
Looks hard to beat after an impressive chase debut success over course and distance last time out for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch. This six-year-old was always biding his time over hurdles last season and looked a different horse when tackling these bigger obstacles. He was up near the pace and always travelling well under Deutsch before easing nicely clear. Stamina is not in doubt and you would hope he can improve from that encouraging effort. Dependable Guy lines up in opposition but he would ideally want a shorter trip so Can You Call looks the main danger. He was a decent third at Chepstow on comeback in October but looks high enough in the weights for now.
HABRDI (6.00 Chelmsford, nb)
Can follow up his impressive Wolverhampton success with another victory. He really enjoyed his first taste of an all-weather track, powering away from his rivals to score by four lengths. The winning margin was all the more impressive because you got the impression there was a lot more for jockey David Egan to go for. He will need to take another step forward after an 8lb hike up the handicap but there’s no reason why Gaiden should turn that form around despite being better off at the weights. A bigger danger looks like Alfred who won nicely at Wolverhampton but he’s another with a lot more lead in the saddle this evening.
WOT YOU WEARING (3.50 Taunton, treble)
Has been in fantastic form this season and has already clocked up three wins. The past two of them have come in testing ground at Chepstow where his staying power has come to the fore. His first visit to the Welsh track saw him land a 17-runner handicap with plenty in the tank and he got the better of a real battle to score in a photo last time. He’s gone up a more-than-fair 2lb for that battling effort and he will get his favourite stamina-sapping conditions again. He takes a fair drop in class here and can land a deserved hat-trick for local trainer Robert Stephens (left).

VALGRAND (3.40 Warwick)
Has his sights lowered by the Skeltons after being thrown into the deep end of a Cheltenham bumper for his debut. The four-year-old did really well to finish second in the big field, just over two lengths behind the winner. Many of the yard’s runners have been taking a big step forward from their debut and he doesn’t need much more to strike in these calmer waters. This looks a decent bumper with Unsinkable Molly B and Junker D’Allier likely to be winning races before too long – just hopefully not today.
