Horse racing tips: Templegate’s NAP looks a really promising novice chaser going places for the Skeltons

TEMPLEGATE tackles Tuesday’s racing confident of building the bank for another mega weekend at Cheltenham.

Back a horse at the best price by clicking their odds below – and take note of a former Gold Cup winner he’s firmly got his eyes on for later in the week.

THE KING OF RYHOPE (2.22 Ffos Las, nap)

He was a smart novice hurdler, winning impressively on his second start at Exeter before being sent off favourite for a Haydock Grade 2. Running with credit in third, he ended the campaign with a modest run under a penalty. Unsurprisingly, connections wasted no time sending him over fences this season. He took on an experienced field on chasing debut and beat them soundly, which is no mean feat. A 7lb rise for that success is far from harsh and he looks a horse to follow this season and could have his sights raised to graded company after this.

PRESENTING NELLY (1.40 Fontwell, nb)

She won twice from five starts over hurdles, beating the 123-rated Manimole for the second success. She was below her best at Hexham over two miles when last seen, but that track and trip would not have suited and we should be willing to forgive that tamer effort. I say trip because she was staying on all the time over two miles seven on her second hurdling start and it is no surprise to see Skelton stepping her up to a marathon trip. Skelton also sends her over fences, which should bring about further improvement, and she looks tough to beat off a mark of just 108 on her handicap debut.

SIZING POTTSIE (2.45 Wincanton, treble)

Once rated 155 over fences in his pomp, he can lead them a merry dance off a mark of just 122 in a handicap hurdle. He is a bit longer in the tooth now at the age of nine, but he only giving best late on to a progressive rival on return at Uttoxeter. The handicapper has very kindly left him on the same mark and he should take a big step forward in terms of fitness.

Eye on the weekend

THE Cross Country Chase is not everyone’s cup of tea but it has become littered with former Grade 1 winners in recent years.

Gordon Elliott-trained class acts such as Tiger Roll, Delta Work and Galvin have all graced the race.

That could be taken to a whole new level on Friday at Cheltenham, however, with Henry De Bromhead’s Minella Indo entered.

He famously won the Gold Cup for Rachael Blackmore in 2021 and was runner-up to A Plus Tard 12 months later.

He won a Grade 3 on his return this term before finishing last of four to Gerri Colombe in Down Royal’s Champion Chase last month

De Bromhead is clearly thinking outside the box to keep the fire burning bright in his soon-to-be 11-year-old.

We have no idea how much he has schooled and stamina is a query but, should he like the ups and downs of the banks course at Cheltenham, a mark of 160 will not be a barrier to success.

He is a general 7-1 shot for the marathon and, even if you are not backing, it will be an interesting watch.
