But now the store has been bought by regeneration chiefs in order to make way for a £300m leisure development.

A post on a local Facebook page reads: “Drummers House of Jokes permanently closes After 53 years of operation on Central Drive, an Iconic Blackpool shop has closed its doors for the last time.

“House of Jokes has been serving up outfits, pranks & jokes for best part of half a century but following a compulsory purchase order they have closed to make way for the development of the new 300 million pound Blackpool Central project.

“The shop owners will maintain their presence in town through their joke shop located on the corner of the Promenade & Waterloo Rd in South Shore.”

Fans have been taking to social media to talk about their favourite memories of the store.

One person wrote: “Loved this shop. Visited every year when I came down to Blackpool.

“End of yet another era though good news the shop is relocating. See you next year all the best.”

Another said: “I was never out of there each time I went to Blackpool.

“My mum hated my whoopee cushion, fart sprays, but it was my pocket money she said and I can buy what I want. Best days ever.”

The demolition of the building will make way for a brand new “heritage quarter”.

Plans include three indoor theme parks, a 200-room hotel plus bars, restaurants and an outdoor entertainment space.
