Derek Hough’s wife Hayley Erbert rushed into emergency surgery following cranial hematoma

Derek Hough has revealed his wife Hayley Erbert was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after suffering a cranial hematoma, or an accumulation of blood in the skull.

The Dancing with the Stars alum, 38, shared the news on Instagram on Thursday, (Friday in Australia), telling followers she is in a “stable condition” after having an emergency craniectomy during their Symphony of Dance tour.

“At the end of last night’s tout performance in Washington, D.C., my wife Hayley became disoriented and was taken to hospital,” Hough wrote in his post.

”She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy. She is in stable condition.”

He went on to thank the medical staff who helped the 28-year-old throughout her health scare and asked fans for their ”prayers and positivity”.

“I want to thank the first responders and medical personnel who have cared for and continue to care for her. I ask for your prayers and positivity during this time,” Hough added.

Actress Nina Dobrev commented underneath: “Sending love and prayers.”

Another follower added: “I was in DC last night. The show was absolutely amazing… Hayley was fabulous. I am so sorry this happened. We were sad not to see her at the end of the show. I had a feeling something happened. Many prayers and sending love.”

According to the Cleveland Clinic, a craniectomy “is a type of brain surgery that relieves pressure on your brain”.

The Mayo Clinic says “an intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood within the skull” which can be “life-threatening”. It can be caused by trauma.

The couple married just three months ago in an intimate ceremony in Monterey County, California.

According to People the newlyweds, who started dating in 2015 after meeting on the hit US show Dancing With the Stars, tied the knot in a redwood forest before hosting a reception in a 100-year-old barn on a country estate.

They announced their engagement in June last year, with Hough writing on Instagram at the time: “It’s only the beginning… the beginning of forever.”

Hough is well known for his work on DWTS and won the mirror ball trophy with Bindi Irwin back on the show in 2015.
