There are plenty of scary hotel stories that might put people off sleeping in them soundly.

One cabin crew member recently revealed how she keeps her hotel room secure when she’s travelling on her own.

Flight attendant Bobbie Smith shares her travel tricks and hacks on her Instagram page, LifewitBobbie.

In a recent video, she revealed how to create a makeshift lock using just two coathangers.

She said: “Grab yourself two hangers, and you want to open this [the latch] up and put one of the hangers on the latch.

“Then, put this one around the door [handle], and latch this onto here [the other hanger] and lock it.

“And if they try to open this door, there’s no way they can get in through that.”

In the footage, Bobbie took two hangers from the hotel wardrobe and threaded the hook of the first hanger through the latch on the door.

She then placed the second hanger over the door handle, before she connected the two hangers to make a strong lock.

Because some hotel rooms don’t come equipped with coathangers, Bobbie also shared another hotel safety hack.

She added: “If it does not have two hangers, you want to grab a towel and loop that towel through the latch, and shut it [the door].”

In the footage, she showed how the towel prevents anyone on the outside from accessing the hotel room.

Despite being a flight attendant, Bobbie shared the tricks to help keep solo travellers safe.

In the video caption, she wrote: “This is not just a safety tip for flight attendants but for the solo traveller.

“It can be very nerve-racking, staying in a hotel by yourself, so knowing how to protect yourself and making sure no one can get in your room is important.

“I found these two solutions that make me feel more comfortable, safe, and sleep better.”

Bobbie isn’t the only travel expert who has recommended using makeshift locks to her followers.

Last year, hotel cleaner Terence Harris posted a TikTok video explaining how to create a makeshift door lock in a hotel room.

In the video, he also tied a hand towel around the clip at the top of the door and secured it in place using a hair tie.

Meanwhile, flight attendant, Cici In The Sky, revealed how you can prop an ironing board against the door as a burglar deterrent.

But hotel safety expert, Carolyn Pearson, who is the CEO and Founder of Maiden Voyage, a business dedicated to making travel safer, doesn’t put much stock in homemade locks.

She told Sun Online Travel: “I personally wouldn’t use the towels or rubber bands, because you shouldn’t be relying on them to fit into and around doors perfectly.

“Just get a rubber doorstop for £3, I think that’s enough and it will secure the room.”

Sun Online Travel found rubber door wedges for as little as 97p at online retailer Vital Parts UK.

While other household brands like Wilkos were selling doorstops for just £1.

Meanwhile, a flight attendant recently shared her top safety hacks for travellers to prevent hotel break-ins.

Royal Marine Robin has revealed how you can stay safe in your hotel room using just a belt.
