I’m a car expert… a viral winter hack could be catastrophic for your windscreen – plus there’s a cheaper alternative

CAR experts has explained why a viral winter hack could have catastrophic consequences for your windscreen.

The team at Swansway Motor Group urged drivers to steer clear of the dangerous defrosting trick.

The hack, which involved pouring a bottle of vodka over the windscreen to prevent it from frosting up, has gained popularity on TikTok.

The science behind it is that alcohol has a lower freezing point that water and so coating the glass in a strongly alcoholic drink will stop condensation from freezing on it.

However, the specialists warned against the potential unintended consequences of this approach.

They said: “Using vodka to stop your windscreen from freezing is not advisable due to its chemical composition.

“The high alcohol content, while effective in lowering the freezing point of water, can be detrimental to the windscreen’s glass and the car’s paint.”

The spokesperson explained that this is due to the fact that alcohol is a solvent and so can cause the sealant that holds the pane in place to deteriorate, as well as damaging the paintwork.

Indeed, most paint strippers count methanol, an extra strong form of alcohol, among their ingredients.

Repeated contact with alcohol can cause “micro-abrasions” in the windscreen and increase the risk of cracks and chips.

This could end up costing you a hefty sum as chip repairs can cost over £100 while a full replacement could set you back between £200 and £300.

Instead, Swansway recommended a much cheaper, safer and more effective alternative.

They added: “A much cheaper alternative compared to using vodka for defrosting car windscreens is a cut potato – which is a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative.

“The natural sugars in potatoes create a barrier against frost, reducing buildup without the risks of chemical damage or residue that vodka might pose.

“This method is not only cost-effective but also safer for your windscreen’s integrity.”

Another top tip was shared in October as a car servicing expert told drivers how to make use of a 10p everyday item to prevent windscreen freezing.

And a NASA engineer who sent spaceships up into -270C cold explained how an “unexpected” method makes defrosting easy.

It comes after it emerged that 2023 was the worst year on record for car thefts as sinister new technology was employed by crooks.

Meanwhile, an urban explorer posted a video of an abandoned car dealership still full of brand new motors with zero miles on the clock.
