But if Al-Ettifaq fail to meet the Spaniard’s wage demands, other clubs are ready to pounce.
De Gea has been without a club since being released by United at the end of last season.
He earned up to £375,000 per week at Old Trafford and left because a new deal could not be agreed, with Andre Onana coming in to replace him as Erik Ten Hag’s No 1 goalkeeper.
De Gea is seeking a massive pay hike in order to follow other big names to the Middle East.
Sources say Saudi clubs will be less willing to overpay in the winter window after splashing out more than £750m between them in the summer.
