PLANS have been revealed for a huge airport in Europe – but flights aren’t likely to take off anytime soon.
Lisbon could soon be home to a brand-new airport, that’s if final plans are approved by the appropriate authorities.

The new airport, which will be located somewhere around the Portuguese capital, is expected to increase passenger numbers to the country.
Despite Lisbon Airport reaching its passenger capacity in 2019, the new airport has faced a lot of setbacks.
Plans for a new airport in Lisbon were first announced in 2008, but an exact location has yet to be established.
According to the local news website the Portugal Resident, the relevant authorities are still deciding between nine locations, including areas like Portela and Alcochete, Portelaand Pegões, Rio Frio and Poceirão, and Pegões.
The location hasn’t been the only hurdle developers have had to overcome.
Earlier this month, the Order of Architects (an authority on architecture in Portugal) was sceptical that a construction company would undertake the sizeable project.
According to Portugal Resident, they said: “If, as is expected, given the ‘tight timetable’, the contract defined to carry out this megaproject is a single procedure for all these needs, then there will be few companies in the world with the technical and logistical capacity to present themselves for its execution.”
The Order of Architects president, Avelino Oliveira, added: “We remain highly concerned about the process and the airport design to be proposed.
“[The] architects’ main concerns have not been addressed within the scope of the work being carried out.”
Even though the project will be challenging for technicians and architects, it’s still likely to go ahead.
In an article in Essential Business, Carlos Moedas the Mayor of Lisbon previously said: “Obviously, for many years we’ve had Portela +1 on the table, but for me the position is clear.
“We need an airport now. Whether it is in one location or another is a technical question, but the airport has to move ahead for the good of all concerned.”
According to the Portuguese Minister for Infrastructures, João Galamba, a final report regarding the airport will be released by the beginning of January.
The delay in construction work is a sore point for many politicians, with some moaning about the “50-year-delay”.
It’s not yet known how much the construction of the airport will cost, but around 10,000 workers will be needed to build the new airport.
Meanwhile, a £7billion mega airport is also coming to Europe, with flights expected from 2028.
Construction work should begin on Warsaw Solidarity Airport, also known as Central Communication Port, by the end of the year.
Several airports in the UK are looking to relaunch passengers, including Manston Airport, in Kent.
Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which closed in November 2022, could reopen thanks to a new multi-million-pound plan.
And Plymouth Airport hopes to reopen after being closed for more than a decade.
