Now it has been announced that they will collide one more time in the Middle East.
Ronaldo’s Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr will face Messi’s MLS side Inter Miami in February.
That will be part of the Riyadh Season Cup and the match is being billed as ‘The Last Dance’.
Brazilian superstar Neymar, a former team-mate at both Barca and Paris Saint-Germain of Messi’s, could also be on display at the showpiece if he recovers from injury.
His Al-Hilal side are also part of the tournament, which will take place just before Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s boxing world heavyweight unification bout.
But it is the showdown between 38-year-old Portuguese legend Ronaldo and his 36-year-old Argentine rival Messi that has most fans talking following the announcement.
“Goat vs goat,” commented one supporter along with a love heart emoji.

Along with a sad face emoji, another response said: “The last dance for real.”
Despite many others calling it a “cash cow” and just “money grabbing”, many were still excited at the prospect.

Fresh from winning the World Cup with Argentina last December, Messi left PSG to head Stateside and sign for the David Beckham-owned Inter Miami earlier this year.
The forward, who has lifted the Ballon d’Or a record eight times, has since secured them their first-piece of silverware as they won the Leagues Cup.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo headed to Al-Nassr in January following his explosive exit from Manchester United.
Despite missing out on the title in his first season there, he was celebrating in August as he helped Al-Nassr to Arab Club Champions Cup success.
