Clever new tech actively fends off hacker threats such as costly ransomware and data theft.

It’s designed to protect everything from smartphones to video doorbells like Ring.

The move is part of a trial which is only available to certain Virgin Media O2 broadband customers with the Hub 5 router.

All you need to do is activate the trial within the Virgin Media Connect App.

Smart Security will be automatically downloaded onto your router and gets to work monitoring security across your home’s network.

You can then see what’s been blocked from your web browser, alerting you of any unusual cyber behaviour.

However, people shouldn’t drop their guard just because they have extra protection.

Gareth Lister, Director of Connectivity at Virgin Media O2, has shared four important tips.

Avoid hoarding data

It can be tempting to keep hold of data such as video footage from your Ring video doorbell.

However, it’s best to regularly clear out old footage you probably don’t need anymore.

Back up the important stuff

For all the important stuff such as sensitive documents, it’s best to keep them backed up externally, either on a removable hard drive or the cloud.

That way if the worst happens you still have the backup to retrieve everything.

Use anti-virus software

Anti-virus software is still a great way to avoid damaging attacks like malware that can steal your data.

So ensure it’s installed on all your devices.

Delete suspicious emails

If something pops into your inbox which doesn’t seem quite right, delete the email straight away.

Look out for spelling mistakes, strange looking URLs or amateur logos as these can often be tell-tale signs of a scam or phishing email.
