ANIME fans have been to warned a long-running Crunchyroll app is closing down forever next month.
The popular platform has more than 120million subscribers across the globe.
Notice was sent to users last week
While the streaming side has gone from strength to strength, one of Crunchyroll’s less-known apps has become a little neglected.
However, it still had a loyal fan base that are devastated the service is going.
The app in question is Crunchyroll Manga.
As a a digital manga anthology, the platform has published a number of titles since launching in 2013.
It meant English speaking readers were able to get hold of officially licensed editions of favourites including Futabasha, Kodansha, Kadokawa Shoten and Shōnen Gahōsha little after coming out in Japan.
Crunchyroll Manga was available in 170 countries.
But owner Sony has announced the platform will close starting from December 11.
In a notice to users, the company said: “Beginning December 11, 2023, digital manga will no longer be available on Crunchyroll.”
“That’s devastating, what the hell :(((,” one user wrote on X.
“Really hope it gets picked up by something else or I’m actually going to cry.”
Another said: “Ah damn, I think I’m one for the few people who still used it.”
A third added: “Well that’s kind of a bummer
“Pretty sure there’s a few things that are exclusive to there.
“At least I don’t recall Silver Nina or Joshi Kausei having a release in English other than on that app.”
The move comes little after Sony closed down another site, Right Stuf.
The anime and manga store was merged with the Crunchyroll Store.
