Romero was shown a straight red card by Michael Oliver after his foul was picked up by VAR.

Following the review, the defender was dismissed and Chelsea were awarded a penalty.

After Cole Palmer had converted the spot-kick, a replay was shown on the big screen at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Fans could be heard jeering and booing after seeing that Romero had made contact with the ball before his follow-through on Fernandez.

Gary Neville spotted the replay whilst on commentary and pointed out Spurs had breached Premier League protocol.

However, the incident was still shown twice on the screen to the dismay of home fans.

It is against Premier League rules for anything negative to be shown during the match, including red card incidents.

Romero’s dismissal came after a frantic passage of play which also included a disallowed Chelsea goal.

Moises Caicedo had lashed the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Nicolas Jackson was in an offside position in front of Guglielmo Vicario and obstructing the goalkeeper’s view.

As a result, the goal was disallowed by VAR, who then awarded a penalty for Romero’s foul earlier in the move and advised the referee to send him off.

Spurs will now be without the World Cup winner for their next three Premier League matches.
