They are also at risk of dropping out of the Champions League at the group stages.
And two back-to-back 3-0 defeats, to rivals Manchester City and Newcastle respectively, have made matters worse.
Fans are now starting to lose faith in Ten Hag.
Club officials are also starting to raise questions surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
According to The Athletic, there are currently no plans to sack the Dutchman.
However, some figures share more confidence in him than others – leaving the board split.
Ten Hag is also said to be losing the faith of his players.
His intensity, which was widely seen as a positive last season, is now being viewed as a problem.

Some of his in-game decisions have also caused a stir among the squad.
The 53-year-old’s decision to leave Raphael Varane out of the starting line-up in favour of Jonny Evans before last weekend’s Manchester Derby raised eyebrows in the dressing room.
And his treatment of Jadon Sancho, who was exiled from the first team in September, has also received a negative response.
The report adds that there is also belief behind the scenes that Ten Hag hasn’t fully adapted to the Premier League’s demands having spent over a decade coaching in the Netherlands prior to joining Man Utd.
The Red Devils have lost eight of their opening 15 games so far this season – five of which defeats have come in the Premier League.
