Erik ten Hag’s side 3-0 loss and the club are now off to their worst start in 61 years.
Casemiro captained the team last night in his first game back after an ankle injury that he picked up while playing for Brazil two weeks ago.
He managed just 45 minutes against the Toon and did not reappear for the second-half as he was replaced by Sofyan Amrabat.
Ten Hag was asked why Casemiro was subbed off in his post-match press conference, revealing: “He was injured.
“Just before half-time, he got an injury. That’s why we had to take him off.”
United face Fulham on Saturday in the Premier League and Ten Hag was quizzed on how long Casemiro will be sidelined for.
He replied: “I can’t give an answer on that.
“We have to wait 24 hours, but I think definitely for Saturday, he is out.”

Fans were left dejected after the news, one said: “Extremely disappointed.”
Another added: “Just delete the club and move on.”
Man Utd will be hoping he makes a recovery in time for Wednesday’s crucial Champions League tie away at Copenhagen.
Casmerio heads back into the treatment room with Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo.
However, United were boosted by the return of Aaron Wan-Bissaka yesterday in his first appearance since September following a hamstring strain.
Meanwhile, an internal investigation is being carried out to find the reason why the squad has been plagued by injuries this season.
