‘99% of drivers don’t know it’, driver says as Brits quizzed on misunderstood road signs – how many do you remember?

A DRIVER has quizzed Brits on a misunderstood road sign, claiming that “99%” won’t know it.

The anonymous motorist took to Reddit to share an image of the sign, stumping plenty of commenters.

Can you guess some of the UK’s most common road signs?

The snap shows a white circle with a thick black line striking through it at a 45-degree angle.

The person posting it captioned the image: “I’m convinced 99% of people don’t know what this sign means.”

Their claim prompted plenty of hilarity on social media, with commenters cracking jokes about the sign’s potential meaning.

One wrote: “40mph until you reach the next village and a 30mph zone, where you continue to do 40mph.”

Another chuckled: “It means ‘minimum speed – 80mph.”

Thanfully, the RAC was on hand to provide a correct answer, which was successfully guessed by a few already.

The organisation’s website states:” A white circular sign with a single black diagonal stripe through it tells you that the national speed limit applies on the upcoming stretch of road.

“It supersedes any previous speed limit signs you may have had to adhere to, such as passing through temporary roadworks.

“Of course, even when the national speed limit applies, it might not always be safe to drive at that speed, so use your common sense on this.”

However, Brits could still be caught out as the national speed limit varies depending on the type of road you are using.

In a built-up or residential area, it is 30mph, changing to 60mph on a single carriageway for cars and 50mph for larger vehicles, including vans.

This then changes to 70mph for cars of dual carriageways, with bigger motors limited to 60mph.

It’s important to note that a dual carriageway doesn’t mean a two-lane road.

The term applies to any road with, as you might expect, two ‘carriageways’, meaning at least one lane of traffic in each direction separated by a central barrier or reservation.

The same 70mph speed limit also applies to motorways.
